Today is Today

Today is today. Today is not yesterday, and today is not tomorrow.

It seems a part of the human condition, to worry. Whether it’s about the past or the future, humans have perfected the art of worrying. But God says, “therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Mattew 6:34). And God’s grace is sufficient for today.

The start of each new day offers, well, we don’t really know what it will offer. I may plan a day, have my expectations and to do lists, however, today will offer what today will offer. It may not be what I had hoped for, however, we are each given this day’s “daily bread.”

There is an expression on the Camino, “the Way provides.” What you need will present; that’s how it goes on this journey. When your water supply is quickly dwindling, a fountain appears. When you are hungry and tired, a cafe awaits around the corner with fresh, homemade cheese from the family dairy. When you need a little music to lift your spirits, you stumble upon a village enjoying laughter, singing and dancing.

The Camino is full of pilgrims this time of year, and finding accommodations has been a challenge. On a couple of occasions, we have had to stay outside of the villages that are along the Camino path, and after six hours of walking, the idea of a few more miles to make it to our lodging seems like an impossible feat. Plus, we are mature enough in age to want to save our feet for the next day. Without hesitation, the locals step in and call a cab for you so you can make it to your destination. There are good people in the world, although some times we may be led to believe they have all but gone.

The Way provides. It always does, whether walking el Camino or walking in our daily lives, Jehovah Jireh, the God who provides, offers what we need.
