Silent One

Silent One, you are tucked away, invisible and unknown. The world, unaware of your existence, moves on as usual.

If your existence is unknown, do you hold any less value? If your voice is unheard, does it carry any less weight? Hidden and silent, you carry on.

The world does not know what you look like or what you sound like. The world does not know what your future holds. It has yet to discover what impact you will have or what purpose has been specifically given to you. The world does not know your name, Silent One. Are you to be thought of as any less?

In time, your hidden state is exposed. Emotions run the gamut by those who suddenly come to know of your existence – joy and excitement or disbelief and distress. Silent One, do you feel all of this? You carry on.

Words spoken are laced with emotions. Words of love and affirmation or disappointment and rejection are heard. They cover you like a blanket, one of comfort or one of sorrow. You know the difference, don’t you.

Oh Silent One, you carry on, either with expectant joy or with suffocating grief.

Time passes…decisions made…your voice, still unheard. Hidden deep within, in the realm of the invisible, your existence ceases. Many weep.

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb…My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

Psalm 139:13, 15-16

Dedicated to the unborn we never met, whose voice we never heard, whose purpose we never saw fulfilled and who did not have a choice.
