Desert Journey – Day 13

Where does one get refreshment in the desert? Where is thirst quenched? I am feeling a bit thirsty this morning and could stand a drink of water.

Coffee or water, that’s pretty much what I drink. It would be coffee all day, but I know that’s not really good for me, so water it is (and some hot tea). Isn’t it interesting that the simplest and most basic of things is the most essential for life. Clear, non-descript, non-tasting water has more importance than shelter, food, relationship, etc. I have no idea why my mind is exploring this.

Jesus says, come to the well. I follow him. I like the well. In the past he has brought me here. Many times though, I arrive so depleted only to sit and lean my head against the well, completely empty. We make our way towards the well in the distance.

Jesus brings the water to the surface in no time. He’s very efficient at the well. The heat of the day is now felt; the water is still cool and refreshing. Frequent visits to the well are needed, he says. It is the only source that is life-giving.

At times, I seem to get lost in my own little world and I forget to come to the well. Somehow my wandering takes precedence and I am left thirsty. Why is that? How is it that earthly distractions can so easily keep me from coming to get a drink from the well?

Jesus wants to offer me a drink. Remembering to find my way to the well is my challenge, for there he waits, with refreshment to quench my thirst.
