The Dawn Chorus – Singing our Tune

I am awake early this morning. It is dark outside, but life is stirring. The sounds of birds singing fill the air like an unending concert, with trills and melodies, calls and responses. Each individual bird has a recognizable tune. Their early morning concert is appropriately called the “dawn chorus.”

God must have a special something for birds. They are mentioned many times in scripture. We hear about God’s creation, sustenance and protection of birds. And so, the birds sing without hesitation for the Creator has taken care of all things. (If you have a moment take a look Matthew 6:26-34).

We are a lot like the birds, in that we each have a song that is uniquely ours. It is certainly identifiable to the Creator who always listens to our tune. He knows our song.

I am asking

What is my tune? Is it joyful and sweet? Is it peaceful and calm? Has criticism snuck in or has somberness and fearfulness taken root? What tune is my heart singing that reaches the ears of the Creator and those around me?

Birds don’t seem to require any tuning. However, any instrument that sounds flat or sharp, is hardly pleasing to the ear. Whether you are a musician or not, you can’t help but notice when an instrument is out of tune. I am asking myself, am I sounding a bit flat or sharp?

Tuning Process

To hear our tune, we need to listen. The more we practice listening, the sharper our hearing becomes and the more we notice if a note is off. To get back in tune, we may want to spend time with the Creator of the instrument. A small adjustment might be a good thing; a change of heart perhaps or a different perspective, even a new mindset or habit could help the tuning process. What is the original song you were created to sing? Sometimes the original gets out of tune.

Our Creator made us to sing, just like the birds. God loves us, provides for us, sustains us and protects us. If He’ll do this for the birds, how much more will He do this for us?

The birds awake each day with great exuberance in their song, ushering in the break of day. Oh what a privilege to sing in the dawn chorus with the Conductor, singing our uniquely, perfectly tuned song, for all to hear.
